6 Best Hidden Speakeasies in NYC

Published on June 5, 2014 by

Although the prohibition days are over, NYC is still home to a handful of secret under-the-radar bars that have the ultimate 1920’s vibe. Since most of these exclusive locales are unmarked or disguised the hard part is finding these hidden hotspots that is, until now.

1. The Garret

They say that no good story ever starts with someone eating a salad, but what about a burger? Go to the 5 Guys in the West Village and walk past the ordering station to find a mysterious staircase in the back.

Journey upstairs and you will find yourself standing in The Garret, an artist inspired speakeasy.tl-horizontal_main-3

The eclectic design of this bar features two massive skylights, an abundance of hourglass, and a taxidermy rhino head in the private party room.tl-horizontal_main-2

To see something even more bizarre, venture over to the restroom, where you will find an anxiety-inducing doorknob installation on the back of the bathroom door.giphyburger

If the atmosphere isn’t convincing enough, this spot also serves exclusive 5 Guys burgers that you can’t get at any other 5 Guys location.

2. PDT – Please Don’t Tell

If you head down to St. Mark’s place to grab a bite at Crif Dogs…

…you may notice that a lot of people go into the old phone booth in the corner of the room.DSC01672

However, even more peculiar, is that they don’t come out. That’s because the phone booth conceals the hidden entrance of Please Don’t Tell.PDT_

To get in on the action, enter the phone booth and dial 1 – a hostess will answer the phone and if approved the wall will open to show a secret happy hour heaven complete with taxidermy animals and trendy cocktails.tumblr_mvpstjbv6q1t08vgjo1_500

3. The Back Room

To get a truly authentic taste of the prohibition, venture down to the LES and find the gated, unmarked door of the Lower East Side Toy Company.

Then walk through the dingy alley, climb up a metal staircase and walk into The Back Room, one of the only remaining original prohibition bars left in New York City.enhanced-buzz-15768-1383417642-10

This dimly lit speakeasy will transport you back to the roaring 20’s with their authentic decor, beer masked by brown paper bags and top-notch cocktails served in teacups.giphybkcs

The Back Room even has an exclusive VIP-only private lounge hidden behind a bookcase.
