Best gelato ever!

Best gelato ever!

icecreammakerSo much has been going on these past few weeks with trying to finish applying to graduate school, the Summer Reading Program starting at work, baking, and spending quality time with Duane; I have not had much time to finish any posts. We have about six drafts that need to be published. This is one recipe that I have been dying to share, homemade Chocolate Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt. For some time I was eating a pint of this new gelato like every few days (Talenti, ever heard of it? Addicting)! After calculating how much I was spending on ice cream a week, I decided to buy an ice cream/frozen yogurt/gelato and more maker. Wow, that sounds really bad….any way. There were a lot of good choices, but since I was not trying to spend over a certain amount I went with this Hamilton Beach brand from Amazon Hamilton Beach 68322 Ice Cream Maker, 1.5-Quart, Blue. For the price, not bad so far. This recipe is the second I have tried with this maker. The first recipe I tried was a gelato recipe, and I think I over filled the tub. This one, my second recipe, came out amazing! I was quite happy with how the frozen yogurt turned out. I will be honest, it is a lot easier to go to the grocery store and pick up a pint/gallon of your fave and indulge at home. MUCH EASIER! Especially since the ice cream has to freeze. I mean who would have thought… the ice cream has to freeze! Also, you have to plan for when you want to eat ice cream, so you have enough time to freeze the tub and allow the mixture to chill. What I love about making homemade ice cream is that I know there are no artificial ingredients, it is lower in calories since I am picking the ingredients, and I am saving money. This was definitely an excellent buy and this right here is a fantastic chocolate chocolate chip frozen yogurt recipe!

I’ve already made and devoured another frozen yogurt recipe….SO good, can’t wait to share that one as well!!

Double boiler method

Double boiler method

*Every ice cream maker is different, chill times may differ depending on the make and model. In the directions under “prep time” I only put in how long it took me to prep the mixture. There is a lot of “chilling” added in, and then the churning. Check your ice cream maker’s instruction manual.

Chocolate Chip Frozen Yogurt

  • Prep time:
  • Cook time:
  • Total time:
  • Yield: 4
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Recipe type: Dessert

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp corn starch
  • 1 (12 oz) can fat free evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup vanilla low fat yogurt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 oz coarsely chopped semi-sweet chocolate

Directions:

  1. Stir together the cornstarch and sugar, and place in a saucepan. Stir in the evaporated milk, and chocolate chips. Cook over medium heat using the double boiler method (picture above) until chocolate is melted and the mixture is thickened. Stir constantly to prevent burning.
  2. Remove the mixture from the heat, and stir in the vanilla yogurt and vanilla. Refrigerate until chilled; at least 3 hours, mine chilled overnight. (Not by choice, but because I was tired and went to sleep).
  3. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Approximately fifteen minutes in to the churning/freezing process; begin adding the chopped chocolate chips a little at a time, allowing the mixer to disperse before adding more.
  5. Store frozen yogurt in an air tight container.
