Baked Chocolate Doughnuts

Oh Dunkin Donuts, I love you so!

Oh Dunkin Donuts, I love you so!

The same weekend I first made the Girl Scout Samoa Cookies, I made homemade baked chocolate doughnuts. One of my favorite places to “eat” is Dunkin Donuts, but the only one around where I live is on a college campus. Now I have ventured over a few times, but due to their hours and location it is not a guilty pleasure that I get to indulge in often.

Straight from the oven.

Straight from the oven.

This past Sunday I really wanted doughnuts but of course they are closed on Sunday’s; lucky for me I bought a doughnut pan the previous day. The recipe made 12 doughnuts and the first 6 I had tried a vanilla glaze on top, but it wasn’t what I wanted. So I made a chocolate glaze for the last 6, delicious. If you need justification for indulging in these doughnuts, remember they are baked… I did! 🙂

Baked Chocolate Doughnuts with Chocolate Glaze

  • Prep time:

  • Total time:
  • Yield: 12
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Recipe type: Breakfast

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup light or fat free sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbs canola oil
  • cooking spray for pan
  • FOR THE GLAZE
  • 2 tbs milk
  • 2 tbs cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Directions:

  1. FOR THE DOUGHNUTS
  2. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Prepare the doughnut pan by spraying with baking spray.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
  4. In a small bowl, beat the eggs then add the milk, sour cream, vanilla and canola oil. Beat until combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
  6. Spoon in or use a piping bag to fill your doughnut pan. Piping bag (or zip-lock bag with the corner cut) is much easier then spooning in the mixture.
  7. Bake the donuts for 7 to 8 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and cool for about 3 minutes in the pan, then remove them and allow them to cool further on a wire rack.
  9. FOR THE CHOCOLATE GLAZE
  10. For the glaze, whisk together all ingredients until smooth.
  11. Dip the top of each baked doughnut into the glaze.
  12. Decorate with sprinkles (optional)

Good thing you gave me 2. As soon as I came home, placed the plate on the table, Bentley threw his snack on the floor, grabbed a donut, and took off. He said “mmmmmmmm this is good.”
