Homemade Playdough

Story Time @ the library

Story Time @ the library

This is the first nonedible recipe I have posted on MuffinsandMeat, but I still think it is one worth sharing (for those that have or work with kids like me). On Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s I have preschool story time at the library, and last week I decided we were going to make homemade playdough. This is a recipe that I used when I we made playdough in my classroom. It is quick and simple and chances are the ingredients are already in your cabinets. I always allow the kids to do the pouring which means ingredients end up on the table and not in the bowl. Keep some extra on hand in case you need to add more due to the spillage or if you need more salt or cornstarch to get the consistency you want. The practice batch I made (the one shown below), I used purple food coloring, but I started to think that having the children get purple dye on their hands wasn’t a great idea, so I opted they would just make white.

1st batch, purple (sort of) playdough

1st batch, purple playdough

If your playdough is too sticky, add more salt. If it needs to solidify, add cornstarch, or if your playdough becomes too crumbly, add water a teaspoon at a time.

This is an inexpensive, yet educational on many levels, and fun activity to do with children. It’s also a great rainy day or birthday party idea (all the kids can take home their playdough).

  • Difficulty: easy

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tbs cornstarch
  • 1 cup of water cold
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • food coloring (optional)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together water, salt, and oil. Add food coloring if using any.
  2. In a separate bowl whisk together flour and cornstarch.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mixing in between each addition. Once it becomes too difficult to mix, begin to knead until it becomes the consistency you would like.
  4. You may need to add more salt if it is stickier than to your liking, or more cornstarch if you want it to be thicker.
  5. Store in a sealed bag or air tight container
